Technology for Independence in Mobility in the Community.

Liu, L., Daum, C., Neubauer, N., Cruz, A. M., & Rincón, A. R. (2022).

Community mobility, defined as “…moving self in the community and using public or private transportation” (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2002, p. 620) can be an important aspect of maintaining independence. Some older adults participate in activities in their communi- ties including paid work, civic activities, and caregiving which were described in a previous chapter. Leaving one’s home and moving around one’s community may also be an element of self care activities (such as attending medical appointments, grocery shopping) and activities for enjoyment and self-fulfillment described in Chapter 11. With advancing age, people may experience health conditions and changes in their physical and cognitive abilities that may impact their ability to safely enter and move around their communities. Yet, technologies are available to support older adults’ community mobility and, in turn, support their participation and independence in activities.
