Some forces have used social media to contact missing persons to confirm that they are safe and to encourage them to disclose their whereabouts. However, the challenges and limitations of using social media to attempt contact with missing people needs to be understood. This document lists some basic principles that should be considered when social media is used to send direct messages to a missing person.
